Experts state that chronic venous disease (CVD) is estimated to affect nearly 50% of the global population. The condition can present in various forms, including varicose veins, leg swelling, venous skin changes such as eczema, and even leg ulcers, and the reported prevalence rate is around 40%, shares Dr S Balakumaran, Senior Consultant Vascular and Endovascular Surgeon.

Conditions like varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency, the doctor explains, are not just limited to leg symptoms. “They are also linked to a higher risk of heart failure, coronary artery disease, and atrial fibrillation. Additionally, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a serious complication of venous disease, can lead to pulmonary embolism (PE), a life-threatening condition that puts significant strain on the heart and is a major cause of cardiovascular-related deaths,” he says.

Stating that venous and heart diseases share common risks like age, obesity, smoking, and high blood pressure, the doctor adds, “They also share body changes like inflammation and endothelial damage. This shows our blood system works as one unit. So, treating vein issues may also help prevent heart problems and lead to better overall health.”

According to the doctor, recent evidence from a study published in The Lancet has shown that patients with advanced venous disease like chronic skin infections and leg ulcers have higher rates of cardiovascular disease and overall mortality compared to those without the condition. “These findings suggest that venous and arterial diseases may be interconnected or share common risk factors,” he adds.

Listing out the preventive measures to improve vein health, he shares, “A comprehensive health check-up for varicose veins and leg arteries to assess the overall condition of the circulatory system is crucial. Vascular surgeons are trained specialists who help maintain vascular health. Simple habits like moving often, not sitting or standing too long, drinking enough water, and staying at a healthy weight can improve blood flow and support overall vein health.
